1947 Arm & Hammer and Cow Brand Baking Soda Ad - Daily Vintage Flashback
Today's daily vintage flashback is a 1947 advertisement for Arm & Hammer Baking Soda and Cow Brand Baking Soda. I was unaware and found it interesting that they were one and the same product produced by the same company. Below are some facts from Arm & Hammer:
Baking soda was first developed in 1846 by John Dwight and his brother-in-law, Dr. Austin Church. They eventually split to each have their own baking soda companies. Church & Co. was formed in 1867 with the Arm & Hammer trademark.
In 1876, Dwight & Co. creates their trademark with a Jersey cow in reference to traditional use of baking soda and sour milk in home baking. Eventually people begin calling it Cow Brand.
In 1896, after 29 years of competition, the descendants of both companies merge calling themselves, Church & Dwight Co. Inc.
Finally in 1965, after marketing the same product under both brand names for over 60 years, they choose to consolidate the two names and use Arm & Hammer for their baking soda.
I did find that even though they consolidated the two products in 1965, they apparently still made Cow Brand baking soda in the 1980s to early 1990s. When doing a google search I came across a couple of commercials. I'll embed those under the 1947 advertisements.
So, did your family use Arm & Hammer or Cow Brand? Do you have a favorite recipe or use for their product? Leave comments below.
