Maria Montez Pin-Up Girl September 1943

Maria Montez is our daily vintage flashback as pin-up girl of September 1943. She was a favorite in over 200 military camps. According to the clipping from Movies and Radio Guide, a large portion of her fan mail came from men in the service and it's no wonder, she gave autographs to more than 5,000 soldiers while on location for "Cobra Woman". As of September 1943, behind Dorothy Lamour, she had sold more war bonds than any other person in Hollywood. Pretty impressive!

A little about Maria Montez: She was born Maria Africa Antonia Gracia Vidal de Santo Silas in Barahona, Dominican Republic, June 6, 1912. Though she was born there she was actually Spanish and the daughter of a Spanish consul. Her first film was in 1940, The Invisible Woman. Her roles improved in 1942 starting with Arabian Nights. These fantasy/adventures made her extremely popular. She was married two times and moved to Europe with her second husband, actor Jean-Pierre Amount, after her career in Hollywood had fizzled out.  She made more movies while in Europe for German, Italian and French productions. During the 1940s she was Universal's best paid star. She had one daughter, an actress, Tina Aumont. She passed away tragically at the age of only 39, September 7th, 1951 in Suresnes France. She drowned in her bath after a suspected a heart-attack.

Personal Quote: about viewing Arabian Nights 1942 - When I look at myself, I am so beautiful I scream with joy!
